What is a Freemason?

There are many approaches and views about what it means to be a Freemason.

In Denmark there are two branches: The Danish Freemason Order and the Danish Freemason Guild.

Freemasonry officially started in England in 1717. Here 4 lodges met, which together formed a grand lodge. This must have meant that the Freemasonry already existed before 1717.

In Denmark the masonry started in 1743 and exists today in all major Danish cities. The Danish Freemason Order has its headquarters on Blegdamsvej in Copenhagen and the Danish Freemason Guild on Smallegade in Frederiksberg.

Freemasons has historically been associated with a lot of mysteries and secrets. Today it is not that mysterious anymore. The only things you cannot get access to if you aren’t a Freemason are the audition rituals and the graduation rituals. Everything else is publicly available.  

Freemasonry is an esoteric learning system, which today is based on initiation through rituals. The word “Freemason” comes from the expression freestone-mason, which was used in the Middle Ages for stonemasons and builders.

In the 1700's a number of royals, emperors and nobles got interested in the freemasonry and the lodges were therefore able to attract the highest social classes.
